Abstract
843,047. Change-speed control. UHER, E. March 21, 1958 [March 27, 1957]; No. 9158/58. Class 80 (2). An engine-driven pump discharging through a fixed orifice in a closed circuit determines the pressure, balanced against a pulley spring, to provide speed-responsive ratio shift in an expanding pulley gear. An engine 3 drives a pump 1 drawing fluid from a tank 5 and returning the fluid through an orifice 7 to provide speed proportionate pressure in a pipe 8 leading to the bore 9 of a shaft 10 carrying an expanding pulley 12, 14 and a sprocket 18. The sprocket 18 drives a vehicle 22 wheel by chain 19 and sprocket 20. The movable flange 12 of the pulley 12, 14 is urged towards the fixed flange 14 by a spring 23 whose action is opposed by the fluid pressure on a piston 11 connected to the flange 12 by a pin 13. The pulley 26, 27 is driven from the engine 3 through a speedresponsive centrifugal clutch 33 and has its movable flange 27 urged by a spring 31 of less strength than the spring 23. A V-belt 25 connects the two pulleys. In a modification an adjustable by-pass is provided across the fixed orifice to vary the speed-responsive characteristics and a spring- loaded relief valve is connected across the pump. The adjustable valve may comprise a needle valve having a predetermined minimum flow, retraction of the needle by manual means providing increased flow, the needle valve thus providing the characteristics of both the fixed and adjustable orifices. The needle valve may be controlled in accordance with engine load or temperature.
