Abstract

A polymer composition for stabilizing fuel oils comprises (1) an oil-soluble, basic amino nitrogen containing copolymer of a plurality of polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compounds at least one of which is amino nitrogen free and at least one of which contains a hydrocarbon chain of at least 8 carbon atoms, said copolymer containing 0,1% to 3,5% of basic amino nitrogen and (2) a fatty acid monoamide of an ethylene polyamine having the general formula: Ac-(NH-CH2-CH2)n-NH2 wherein Ac is an aliphatic acyl group of from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 4. The fatty acid amide may be derived from caprylic, pelargonic, capric, myristic, lauric, palmitic, margaric, stearic, oleic or linoleic acids and ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine or tetraethylene pentamine. The oil-soluble copolymer (1) is derived from polymerizable oil-solubilizing components, polymerizable components containing basic amino nitrogen groups or groups capable of giving them by after-treatment of the copolymer and, optionally further polymerizable monomers. Lists of these three types of polymerizable component of the oil-soluble copolymer are given as in Specification 843,011 and the preferred components are long-chain aliphatic acrylates and methacrylates with dialkylaminoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates and, optionally, styrene. Examples of components are decyl acrylate, nonyl methacrylate, vinyl stearate, methyl lauryl fumarate, octadecyl acrylamide, dodecyl styrene, lauryl methacrylate, glydicyl acrylate, vinyl chloroacetate, aminoalkyl styrenes, vinyl pyridine, aminoalkyl vinyl ethers, aminoalkyl acrylamide, diallylamine, vinyl and allyl esters, ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, butadiene, isoprene, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylamide, vinyl and alkyl ethers, aryl and alkyl acrylamides. The above composition comprising polymer (1) and amide (2) may be used in small proportions as an oil additive to stabilize fuel oils and prevent emulsification of water therein and the components (1) and (2) may either be added separately to the oil or together in solution in a solvent such as kerosine or fuel oil with or without cresylic acid present. Fuel oils mentioned are cracked oils and Diesel fuel. Specification 734,632 also is referred to.ALSO:A fuel oil composition has incorporated therein (1) at least 0.001% of an oil-soluble, basic amino nitrogen-containing copolymer of a plurality of polymerizable ethylnically unsaturated compounds, at least one of which is amino nitrogen free and at least one of which contains a hydrocarbon chain of at least 8 carbon atoms, said copolymer containing 0.1% to 3.5% of basic amino nitrogen and (2) 0.00025-0.1% of a fatty acid monoamide of an ethylene polyamine having the general formula: Ac-(NH-CH2-CH2)n-NH2 wherein Ac is an aliphatic acyl group of from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and n is a small whole number from 1 to 4 inclusive. The oil may be a cracked fuel oil or diesel oil. The amides may be made from ethylene diamine or polyethylene polyamines and acids such as caprylic, pelargonic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, margaric, stearic, oleic or linoleic acids. The oil-soluble copolymer (1) is derived from polymerizable oil-solubilizing components, polymerizable components containing basic amino nitrogen groups or groups capable of giving them by after-treatment of the copolymer and, optionally further polymerizable monomers. Examples of these three types of polymerizable components of the oil-soluble copolymer are given in Specification 843,011 and the preferred components are long-chain aliphatic acrylates and methacrylates with dialkylaminoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates and, optionally, styrene. The above components (1) and (2) may be used in small proportions as an oil additive to stabilize fuel oils and prevent emulsification of water therein and may be added either separately to the oil or together in solution in a solvent such as kerosine or fuel oil, with or without cresylic acid present. Specification 734,632 also is referred to.
