Abstract
842,887. Aerial housings. FAIREY AVIATION CO. Ltd. Jan. 8, 1958 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30711/56. Class 40(7). [Also in Groups V and VIII] A radome is made of radiation transparent material reinforced by metal contained within the radome walls. In one embodiment a conical radome is made from two or more sheets of glass fibre material impregnated with a thermosetting resin. These are cut to sector shape and are assembled one on top of the other with steel reinforcing strips 11 between them. These strips, which are preferably of bowed cross-section to give additional strength, are arranged to lie radially with respect to the centre 13 of the sector. In order to provide a fairly even strip spacing only a limited number of strips 11 A approach the centre 13, at a point one-third of the way out further strips 11B are added mid-way between the strips 11 A, and two-thirds of the way out additional strips 11C are inserted between the strips 11A and 11B. The flat assembly of sheets with the reinforcement in it is then rolled into conical form and the moulding and curing of the resin completed. To further strengthen the radome so formed eight circumferential stiffeners 15 of graded sizes are secured at equal intervals along its inside surface. These are channel-sectioned rings of moulded fibre glass material having flanges 16 bonded to the wall of the radome by the curing of the resin. Instead of using a plurality of strips to reinforce the radome a thin steel plate having a large number of apertures of suitable shape and size may be employed.
