Abstract
842,815. Moulding fibre-resin articles. GOODYEAR AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. July 22, 1958 [Nov. 8, 1957], No. 23484/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] Ducted structures such as radomes are made by wrapping cores of slippery plastics material of high melting point and tensile strength e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, helically or otherwise with glass-fibre or other fabric impregnated with a heat-resistant thermosetting resin, building the wrapped cores into the desired shape with or without additional impregnated fabric layers, curing the assembly with heat and pressure, using for example a vacuum bag or shaped heated platens, and withdrawing the cores. As shown, Figs. 1 and 2, four rectangular cores 4 are assembled together and wrapped with impregnated fabric 12 for each duct of a radome structure 20. Fig. 5 shows the assembled cores with top and bottom layers 14, 15 under pressure between hollow steam or electrically heated platens 16, 17, curved in two planes at right angles. The cores conform to any desired curvature and may be lubricated, e.g. with silicone grease, for ease of withdrawal. Cores of different shapes and used alone or in various assemblies may be used. The cores may contain reinforcing elements of glass-fibre, wire or braid, or metal wire or cable. The impregnating resins may comprise phenolic, silicone or diallylphthalate or triallylcyanurate resins.
