Abstract

842,697. Dielectric heating. WEST LANCASHIRE RADIO & TELEVISION LABORATORIES Ltd., VICARS Ltd., T. & T., NORTHMORE, R., and NAYLOR, J. F. Jan. 17, 1957 [Jan 28, 1956], No. 2827/56. Class 39(3). In dielectric heating apparatus for the heat treatment of articles moving through the field of an electrode array of the apparatus, the array comprises a plurality of elements each constituting an electrode and some being individually adjustable within the array to enable the effective area of the array to be varied at different points along the length of the array in the direction of movement of the articles being treated. In Fig. 1, each array 6 comprises a number of fixed transverse electrodes 6a having slots in which are slidably mounted fingers 6c ; the area of an array is changed by movement of the fingers in the slots. A plain electrode 7 is not physically connected in circuit and a conveyer band 8 for the articles passes between the arrays and the electrode 7. If the conveyer is of metal it may replace electrode 7. Metal strips 9 connect the arrays to a R.F. generator 5. In Fig. 3, tongues 6d are pivotably mounted on an electrode 6a and may be locked in any position. Movement of the tongues alters the effective (projected) area of an array and also varies the strength of the field applied to the conveyer. The fingers or tongues may be of aluminium, brass, copper or silver.
