Abstract
842,581. Control of motors. ROTORK ENGINEERING CO Ltd. Sept. 15, 1958 [Nov. 14, 1957], No. 35537/57. Class 38 (3). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] A reversible electric motor 10 can be connected through a dog clutch 20, 26 to a shaft 3 carrying a worm 65 meshing a worm gear 4 driving the spindle 1 of a valve, the worm 65 being splined for axial movement upon the shaft 3 and biased leftwards of the Figure by a stack of Belleville springs 77. A pin 81 on a lever 78 engages a groove 82 on the worm 65, the lever 78 actuating a switch 80 controlling the motor. When the spindle 1 stops turning on closure of the valve, the worm 65 tends to slide axially along the shaft 3 and, through the lever 78, actuates the switch 80 to stop the motor. In the valve-opening direction, the motor 10 is controlled by a worm 5 driving through a worm gear 84 to a shaft 85, in turn driving through a variable-ratio device 87 (not further described) to a second switch 86 arranged to stop the motor when the valve has been sufficiently opened. As a modification, the worm 65 may be arranged with a stack of Belleville springs 77 at either end, so that it can slide either left or right of the Figure and accordingly operate the switch 80 when the spindle 1 ceases to rotate on completion of both the valve opening and the valve closing movements.
