A still is maintained at its optimum temperature just below that which will precede flooding of the fractionating column by measuring the rate of reflux and controlling the temperature accordingly. As shown, a syphon near the base of the column alternately fills and empties and so alters the capacitance between foil sheets 6, 7. The capacity change causes an oscillator to start or stop oscillating, the change in oscillator current operating a relay to produce square pulses. The positive pulses obtained by differentiating these pulses trigger a monostable circuit the output of which thus consists of pulses of equal amplitude and duration and a frequency equal to the frequency of operation of the siphon. These pulses after smoothing produce a voltage representative of the rate of reflux and this controls the heat supplied to an immersion heater and a jacket heater by comparison with a pre-set voltage modified by a feed-back voltage from one of the heater supply circuits.
