An electrical system for use with a sewing machine for positioning button holes on garments comprises a means for generating an impulse for a given increment of linear movement of a conveyer carrying the garments, and a means for counting these impulses and periodically causing stoppage of the conveyer, the conveyer being restarted after each operating cycle. A second impulse generator is operated at each cycle causing a second counting device to stop the machine and conveyer after a determined number of operating cycles. A device sensitive to thread tension may stop the machine on thread breakage. The first impulse generator comprises a pair of contacts operated ten times per inch of conveyor movement operating a stepping switch of conventional type. A selector switch connected to the second counting device enables the number of holes per garment to be varied. The second counting device may be isolated if required.
