Abstract

A method for separating a component from a mixture thereof with another component having a boiling point within substantially 10 DEG F. of that of the first component comprises introducing the mixture into a fractionating zone, maintaining a substantially constant pressure in the zone, maintaining the lower end of said zone at the boiling temperature of the higher boiling of said components under said constant pressure, maintaining the upper end of said zone at the boiling temperature of the other component under said pressure, supplying steam to said zone and thereby strip the lower boiling component from said mixture, determining the temperature at two vertically-spaced regions within the zone controlling the steam rate to said zone so as to maintain a predetermined temperature differential between the regions, withdrawing the higher boiling component from the bottom of said zone, and withdrawing the lower boiling component from the top. The process is particularly applicable to the separation of 2 methyl 5 ethyl pyridine, and 2 methyl 5 vinyl pyridine from aqueous mixtures containing them and quinolines, pyrroles and pyrrolines.
