841,723. Grinding. WALTHER, C. K., [trading as WALTHER-TECHNIK C. K. WALTHER]. Dec. 13, 1957 [Dec. 13, 1956], No. 38873/57. Class 60. Apparatus for the surface treatment of workpieces, e.g. smoothing and polishing the surfaces and rounding off sharp edges, comprises a container for substances to be used for the treatment, a conveyer from which a workpiece is to be suspended in the substances and means for vibrating the container, the conveyer being movable in one direction only, motion of the workpiece in that one direction when suspended from the conveyer being caused by the vibrations of the substances in the container. A container 1 mounted on flexible supports and vibrated by a member 2 contains grinding chips, steel balls &c. together with chemical additives in liquid. A workpiece 5 is carried by a holding device 6 suspended rigidly or resiliently from a conveyer 10 supported on a rail 11. The conveyer has a pawl 7 engaging a rack 12 so that the conveyer, and therefore the workpiece, moves unidirectionally. Means 9 may be provided for altering the orientation of the workpiece and the container 1 may be shaped accordingly. The contents of the container have a vibration frequency of at least 800 per minute.
