Abstract

841,715. Securing rotors on shafts. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Aug. 29, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 27445/57. Class 80 (2). A high-speed turbine, compressor, or like rotor 9 has an outwardly tapering hub portion the conical surfaces 12,13 of which are engaged by correspondingly formed distance pieces 10,11, the assemblage being held in position by a nut 8 on the rotor shaft 2, and the angles of inclination of the surfaces 12, 13 to the axis of rotation being such that the sum of their cotangents is substantially equal to Poisson's ratio for the material of which the rotor is made. Bv this arrangement the centrifugal forces set up in the rotor result in sliding movement between the mating surfaces of the rotor and distance pieces, thus avoiding any reduction in the force exerted by the clamping nut 8. Preferably, as shown, the surfaces 12, 13 are equally inclined to the rotor axis, but in a second embodiment one surface is perpendicular to the axis, the cone angle of the other surface being modified appropriately.
