A fixture for supporting a helically-toothed milling cutter 26 during sharpening comprises a base 11, a spindle 17 rigidly supported by an angle bracket 14 from an upstanding member 12, means 25, 29, 27 for holding the cutter on an arbor 24 so that it may be rotated about the spindle 17 and moved axially thereon, indexing means 22 whereby the cutter may be set at successive rotational positions, and a slotted guiding member 41 adjustably secured to the base 11, whereby the free end 42 of an arm 32, adjustably secured on the clamping sleeve 27 may be engaged slidably in the slot to provide the required combination of rotary and axial movement of the damping means and the cutter, in dependence on the setting of the guide arm 41. Securing means 39 fix the guide arm 41 after adjustment to the required angle ; an alternative pivotal point 40 is provided in the base 11 for reversing the angle of the guide bar 41. Adjustment of the arm 32 relative to the clamping sleeve 27 and cutter 26 is effected by slackening a knurled nut 36 on a cotter pin 35 and re-tightening after re-setting the cutter by bringing the next tooth to be sharpened opposite the indexing member 22. The arm 20 carrying the indexing member may also be adjusted relative to the spindle 17 ; it is clamped by a nut 19 between one face of the anglebracket 14 and a flange 18 formed on the spindle. A set-screw 23 is provided to allow of adjustment of the indexing member relative to the arm 20. Axial movement of the cutter during sharpening may be effected by so shaping the retaining ring 33 on the sleeve 27 that it may be moved directly by the operator, or the arm 32 may be moved indirectly through any suitable linkage by a hand lever 44, as shown in Fig. 1.
