Abstract

841,261. Fuel injection systems; regulating. CALIFORNIA RESEARCH CORPORATION. July 24, 1956, No. 22870/56. Classes 7(3) and 7(6). One of two fuels 13, 33, or a mixture thereof is selected by a valve device 5 and circulated through a header 23 from which the fuel injection pumps 27 and injectors 28 are fed. Light fuel 13, filtered at 16, is fed by a pump 11 to a passage 7 and heavy fuel 32 is fed from a tank 58 by a pump 61 through a heater 54 to a passage 6. At starting a valve 12, operated according to engine conditions such as load or speed, closes the passage 6 and opens passage 7 so that light fuel alone passes through pipe 3 to a pump 10 which circulates the fuel through a closed circuit 26 including the header 23 and a back pressure valve 25. As the engine load or speed increases the valve 12, which may be actuated by pressurised air in pipe 8 the pressure of which is varied by a speed responsive governor, progressively opens passage 6 and closes passage 7 so that a mixture of the fuels passes to the pump 10. Circulation of the fuel through circuit 26 prevents the deposition of solid matter from the heavy fuel. The pumps 61 and 11 are provided with by-pass valves 71 and 30 which open at predetermined pressures. The heater 54 is an electric heater the circuit of which is controlled by a thermostat 74 which prevents the fuel temperature exceeding 265‹F. The tank 58 is supplied by a pump 36 from a tank 33, the fuel being preheated in a heater 39 and passed through a filter 42 and a device 45 which includes a centrifugal separator and a means for reducing the size of the fuel particles. Excess fuel is returned from tank 58 through an overflow 53 to the tank 33. A manually operated valve 1 may be set to by-pass the mixing device 5 through a pipe 4 so that the engine operates solely on light fuel. In the modified mixing device 5 of Fig. 4 the valve 12 only controls the heavy fuel inlet 6, the light fuel inlet 7 being permanently open. Alternatively the device 5 may be arranged so that a rapid changeover from light to heavy fuel is made at a predetermined load or speed.
