841,162. Stapling machines. MULLER, H. Nov. 21, 1957 [Dec. 12, 1956], No. 36295/57. Class 89(3) [Also in Group XVI] A machine for stapling folded booklets along the back-fold thereof comprises a driven-conveyer for conveying folded booklets past a stapling device, when the stapling device is mounted on a carrier to which is imparted a horizontal reciprocating motion by means actuated by the means which drive the conveyer, and stapling device is given a simultaneous vertical reciprocating motion, to move it into operative and inoperative position, by lever-mechanism also operated from means which drives the conveyer. As shown the machine comprises a main-shaft 2 on which are mounted sprockets 3 for driving endless-conveyer-chains 4. The shaft 2 is driven from a motor 1 by a belt-andpulley drive 9. The chain 4 carries dogs 5 for pushing assembled-sheets 6 along a saddle-shapedcarrier 7. Crank-pin 12 is attached to the pulley 9 and is connected through a link 13 to the carrierbody 14 of a stapling-head 15. The body 14 is guided in guides 16, 17, for to-and-fro-movement parallel to the conveyer 4. The pin 12 is also connected by a rod 22 to a lever 20 mounted in a bearing 23. Idly-mounted on the pivot-bearing 23 is a bell-crank 21, one arm of which engages a slide-guide 24 of the stapling-head 15, and the other of which carries an electro-magnet 26 having an armature 27 capable, when the electro-magnet is energized, of engaging a cam 29 on the lever 20 so as to couple the bell-crank 21 rigidly to the lever 20, and thus cause up-and-down oscillation of the stapling-head 15 on the carrier 14. The distance between the dogs 5 is equivalent to one revolution of the pulley 9. The electro-magnet is connected in circuit with a feeler 28a, which operates a switch 28 when the sheets to be stapled contact the feeler. At this time the carrier 14 is moving at the same speed and in the same direction as the conveyer, and the stapling-head is moved downwardly to affect stapling when the electromagnet is energized.
