Abstract

841,139. Rectifying devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Jan. 18, 1957 [Jan. 18, 1956], No. 1720/56. Class 37. In a full-wave rectifier, Fig. 1, each of a plurality of rectifying elements a-h of the contact type, comprising e.g. germanium or silicon, is mounted on one of the rectangular heat-radiating metal plates 1-4, 6-9, to which one electrode of the elements is electrically connected, the other electrode, which comprises a terminal post 19, being connected to an adjacent plate. Each plate is provided with a peripheral tag 14 for connection to an external circuit, a central hole through which passes a bolt 15 to clamp the plates in insulated parallel relationship, and four apertures disposed equidistantly from the central hole on the plate diagonals. One aperture, which is larger than the others and flanged, houses the rectifying element which is sealed into the aperture or preferably formed integral with the plate as described in Specification 838,432, and the other three apertures are adapted to receive the terminal post 19 of an adjacent element. An intermediate plate 5, which does not carry a rectifying element, connects together the terminal posts 19 of elements d, e, and comprises the negative terminal of the D.C. circuit. The apparatus shown constitutes a rectifier bridge, each arm of which comprises two elements in series. Modifications. Each tag 14 may be disposed on the periphery of an enlarged central hole, connection to the external circuit being effected by a bus-bar. Two or more rectifying elements may be mounted on each plate to achieve a series-parallel arrangement. To increase cooling, additional centrally dished plates may be placed in electrical and thermal connection with the plates carrying the rectifying elements ; in this case the terminal posts 19 are connected to the additional plates.
