Abstract

840,076. Assembling tyres on wheel rims. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Oct. 3, 1958, No. 31693/58. Class 144 (1). Tubeless tyres 9 are assembled on wheel rims 3 by moving the wheel rim, with a tyre held thereagainst with one part of its lower bead in the rear-well, beneath a pair of pressure members 8 which are initially side by side and which engage the upper bead of the tyre to press it into the rim well, continued travel of the wheel rim causing the members 8 to engage the rim flange and be guided therearound respectively in opposite directions to force the tyre beads progressively into the rim wells. As shown the rims 3 are located by blocks 2 on a slat conveyer 1 with a tyre 9 located between each rim 3 and a stop 4 on the conveyer. The pressure members 8 comprise a pair of vertical spindles 7 each carrying a rubber flange-engaging roller 10 and mounted at one end of an arm 6 the other end of which is pivoted on a fixed bridge 5 transversely spanning the conveyer. The two arms 6 are connected by links 11 to one end of a tension spring 13 which acts to urge the members 8 towards each other.
