Abstract
840,057. Press knives. MONTAGUE KNIFE & CUTTER WORKS Ltd. Nov. 6, 1958 [Nov. 7, 1957], No. 34689/57. Class 31 (1). A press knife for cutting out a stack of shoe components C e.g. soles, from superposed layers of sheet material in which the hollow back 1 of the knife surmounts and is integral with a sharpened knife portion 2, has the inner wall 4 of the hollow back inset with respect to the cutting edge 3 so as to provide a shoulder 6, the opposed portions 8 of the inner wall of the knife portion being vertical and parallel, and the hollow back being such that the medial line l of the surface 5 of the back is in vertical alignment or nearly so with the cutting edge 3. The inner wall 4 may, as shown, be vertical or of upwardly and inwardly tapered form. In addition to the conventional inward bevelling of the lower margin of the outer wall of the knife portion, a lower narrow margin of the inner wall of the knife portion is slightly outwardly tapered or bevelled e.g. the surface of the outward taper or bevel may extend at an angle of 3 degrees or approximately so with respect to the contoured vertical plane containing the cutting edge. The hollow back may be filled with rubber or like resilient material for ejecting a stack of cut components from the knife.
