Abstract
Secondary aliphatic amines of the formula R-NH-R1, wherein R is a C12-C18 alkyl or alkenyl group and R1 is a C12-C24 alkyl or alkenyl group, R being alkyl when R1 is alkenyl and R being alkenyl where R1 is alkyl, said alkyl groups having a tertiary carbon atom attached directly to the amino nitrogen atom and said alkenyl groups having the general formula <FORM:0839865/III/1> in which D1, D2 and D3 are alkyl groups containing a total of 7 to 13 carbon atoms when R is alkenyl and a total of 7 to 19 carbon atoms when R1 is alkenyl, are added in amounts between 0.0005 and 0.05% by weight to lubricating oils, fuel oils, burner oils, diesel fuel oils and other cracked and straight run distillates, in which they function as detergents and anti-sludging agents.ALSO:The invention comprises secondary aliphatic amines of the formula R-NH-R1, wherein R is a C12-18 alkyl or alkenyl group and R1 is a C12-24 alkyl or alkenyl group, R being alkyl when R1 is alkenyl and R being alkenyl when R1 is alkyl, said alkyl groups having a tertiary carbon atom attached directly to the amino nitrogen atom and said alkenyl groups having the general formula <FORM:0839865/IV (b)/1> in which D1, D2 and D3 are alkyl groups containing a total of 7 to 13 carbon atoms when R is alkenyl and a total of 7 to 19 carbon atoms when R1 is alkenyl. The compounds are prepared by reacting an R halide with an R1 amine or an R1 halide with an R amine at temperatures between 75 and 200 DEG C. and in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor. The amines may be used as additives for oils, for selective separation of U, Ta, Pd, Nb, Zn and Co and for removing chloride, sulphate and nitrate ions from dilute aqueous solutions of hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acids.
