In a modification of the invention claimed in the parent Specification the transverse channels q of the rolls approximate to the depth of the scale layer on the material to be rolled and have, as seen in cross-section, flanks which form an apex angle of at least 100 degrees. The spaces r between each pair of successive channels produce a partial increase and the channels a partial decrease in the rolling pressure as shown at e and i respectively on the pressure curve d and lead to additional consolidation of the rolled surface.
