Abstract
A process for coating a bare metallic surface with a layer of a silicate at least 0.5m thick comprises coating the degreased surface with a solution containing from 1 to 14% solids, which solution contains an alkali silicate having an alkali oxide to silicon dioxide molar ratio between 1:2.5 and 1:5.5 and an alkali-resistant heavy metal salt in amount equivalent to less than 0.3% by weight of the heavy metal, then drying the article and heating it to a temperature between 140 DEG and 350 DEG C. The coating may be applied by dipping or spraying. The coating process may be repeated, with intermediate rinsings. Salts of arsenic, bismuth, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony, vanadium and zinc are useful as additives; iodine, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide may also be added. Examples are given of (1) a composition containing sodium silicate, sodium cobaltinitrite and ammonia and (2) a composition containing sodium silicate and cerium ammonium nitrate. The higher ratios of silicon dioxide to alkali oxide may be obtained by reacting additional SiO2 with water-glass.
