Abstract

839,545. Magnetic signal-storage apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 13, 1956 [Aug. 11, 1955; Dec. 14, 1955], Nos. 23121/55 and 35852/55. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a circuit employing a device 1 exhibiting the Hall effect when an electric current 5 and a magnetic field 7 are applied in mutually perpendicular directions, a regenerative coupling is provided whereby the Hall potential induced in response to a transient signal which initiates the magnetic field can be at least temporarily selfsustaining after the signal ceases. The current 5 is maintained by a supply 4 and the magnetic field 7 is generated by current flowing through coils 6. The Hall effect electrodes are connected to the input terminals 9, 10 so that the potential is fed back to maintain the current flow in the coil. The circuit may have three stable states with zero magnetic field or magnetic field in one or other direction. The coil 6 may be wound on a ferro-magnetic core 11, the remanence of the magnetic circuit being arranged to be sufficient to restore the device to its original condition when the energizing current has been switched off and on again. It is stated that the device may operate as a circuit with at least one unstable state by including a time constant circuit in the regenerative circuit.
