Abstract

In processing the products obtained by pyrolytically cracking light oil fractions in a fluidized bed, heavy oils containing not more than 10% of components boiling under 300 DEG C. are used to quench or to assist in quenching the product. The quenching oil is preferably obtained in the processing of petroleum and in the distillation of coal tar. This oil may be recovered and used again or utilized as a fuel oil. In an example, 700 kgs. per hour of Iraqi crude boiling between 50 DEG and 150 DEG C. are submitted to pyrolytic cracking for a time of 1 second at a temperature of 750 DEG C. using quartz sand of average grain diameter 0.4 to 1.2 mms. A petroleum top residuum boiling above 300 DEG C. was introduced into the jet cooler to be withdrawn from the system at the bottom of the gas purifier. 400 kg. per hour was recirculated, and 80 kgs. per hour used for heating the heat carrier material.
