Abstract

839,402. Washing. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 1, 1957 [Oct. 4, 1956], No. 30724/57. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] Radio-active material is removed from an article by immersing it in liquid in an inner container within a bowl, transmitting ultrasonic waves from the bowl to the liquid to produce cavitation at the surface of the article, removing the decontaminated article from the liquid, and sealing the inner container in condition for disposal by removal of container and liquid. Before sealing, a finely-divided adsorbent material, e.g. fuller's earth may be added to the liquid and stirred. The inner container is preferably flexible, not more than <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch thick, and may be of metal foil, e.g. aluminium, copper, tin, lead, or a synthetic resin sheet, e.g. polyethylene or a polyvinyl resin. Adsorbents which may also be clays, iron oxides, halogen salts, colloidal sulphur, activated charcoal, manganese dioxide are used in amounts of 1 to 10% by volume of the liquid, which may be water, a solution of a detergent, or a petroleum derivative. There may also be liquid between the inner container and the bowl. Specification 806,216 is referred to.
