Abstract
838,912. Nuclear fuel elements. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. Sept. 27, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956], No. 30340/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor, fracture of fuel element sheaths is shown on an array of indicating devices, each full element being associated with two of the indicators. Each element is mounted in a stream of coolant, which, if the sheath fractures, becomes contaminated with radioactive fission products. The latter are detected by monitors mounted in the coolant streams. The fuel elements are divided into sets, each set having one indicator common to all the elements of that set and a separate indicator associated with each element individually of the set. The number of fuel elements capable of being monitored in this manner is given by the expression where Y is the number of detectors and Z ! is the number of detectors associated with each fuel element.
