Abstract

838,810. Road vehicle undercarriages. BENDIX-WESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Oct. 21, 1958 [Dec. 9, 1957], No. 33650/58. Class 108(2) An air spring 11 may be controlled by a levelling valve 10 to maintain the vehicle 14 at more than one selected height. For regulation at the normal height the parts of the valve 10 are as shown in Fig. 3. A lever 18 connected at its outer end to the axle, carries an eccentrically disposed roller 84 at its pivotally mounted inner end. The roller 84 has a cam-like relation with a slot 82 in an upper portion 62 of a stepped piston 62, 64. The latter is urged by a spring 65 into engagement with the end of a cavity 52 in a piston 54 which carries a valve member 50. When vehicle load increases, the lever 18 rises, and thus lifts the valve member 50. This lifts a valve 46 from its seat and permits air flow from the reservoir 22 (Fig. 1) to flow via inlet 26, non-return valve 42 and annular chamber 47 in the member 50, to the outlet 12 leading to the air spring. On decreasing of vehicle load, the valve member 50 is lowered and air passes from the air spring via outlet 12 and passage 51 in the member 50, to exhaust to atmosphere at 53. To select a greater height for the vehicle, a valve 28 is reset from a position in which a conduit 32a leading from the base of the valve 10 is connected to amosphere at 34, to a position in which the conduit 32a is connected to the reservoir 22. Pressure air is thus applied to a cavity 78 between the pistons 62 and 84. This forces up the piston 54 and so lifts the valve 46. As air flows to the springs and the vehicle rises, the lever 18 is thereby turned and the piston 64 is accordingly lowered. The valve member 50 and valve 46 are thus brought into closed positions corresponding to equilibrium being attained at the new vehicle height.
