Abstract
Kainite mineral containing sodium chloride as an impurity and consisting of particles at least 90% of which are less than 0.1 mm. in size, is slowly added, with insufficient stirring to create turbulence, to a sulphate mother liquor, whereby there are formed Schoenite crystals of increased particle size together with sodium chloride crystals of the original size; the crystals are classified to separate the Schoenite and sodium chloride. The sulphate mother liquor is that remaining when Schoenite is treated with water to obtain potassium sulphate. Preferably an aliphatic amine or a salt thereof is added to the mother liquor to promote the growth of the Schoenite crystals: amines specified are 3 : 5 : 5 - trimethylhexylamine, 4 : 6 : 6 - trimethylheptylamine and 3 : 5 : 5-trimethylhexyloxy-n-propylamine and salts specified are acetate and hydrochloride. Specifications 752,109 and 774,313 are referred to.
