Abstract

334,169. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and Cocksedge, H. E. March 14, 1929. Wet-separating.-Soluble substances are treated by simultaneous crystallization from a common solution followed by mechanical separation. The separation may consist in first grading by size e.g. by sieving and then by density e.g. by elutriation in an inert liquid, or the size of the particles of one or both of the substances may be controlled during crystallization by seeding, addition to super-saturated solutions, or the addition of colloids such as gelatine, and the mixture of crystals separated by a single grading which may be either sieving or elutriation. Instead of elutriation grading by density may be effected by pneumatic means, centrifugal action, or Wilfley table action. Examples are given of the separation of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate by sieving followed by elutriation in a solution saturated with both salts, and of sodium carbonate and sodium chloride by control of particle size during crystallization followed by sieving or elutriation or both. In the example the control of particle size is effected by seeding with small crystals of sodium chloride produced in the solution by shock cooling. Specifications 144,022; and 322,480, [Class 117, Sifting &c.], are referred to.
