Abstract

528,914. Sink-and-float method. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DOMANIALE MIJN MAATSCHAPPIJ, and TROMP, K. F. May 8, 1939, No. 13662. [Class 82 (ii)] In a sink-and-float method of separating mixed materials the relatively small particles of the materials introduced are caused to fall into the liquid mass at a speed exceeding that at which the relatively large particles are caused to fall therein. Means are provided for relatively retarding the falling velocity of the large particles and/or for relatively accelerating that of the small particles. In the form shown, the large particles falling down shoot 6 are retarded by flexible strip 8 of rubber or leather and the small particles falling down shoot 7 are accelerated by conveyer band 10, so that the small heavy particles are not prevented from sinking. Baffle 5 compels the particles to submerge and horizontal currents of light suspension from aperture 3 and of heavy suspension from aperture 4 assist the separation. The direction of the conveyer band may be reversed, or the band may be replaced by a rotating drum. In place of strip 8 the shoot 6 may be divided into two shoots at right angles so as to reduce the velocity of the large particles. Specification 466,964 is referred to.
