Abstract
838,713. Flexible laminates. DORNBUSCH, P., [trading as DORNBUSCH & CO.]. April 10, 1957 [April 23, 1956], No. 11732/57. Class 140. [Also in Group XVI] A composite web comprising a fabric, paper, or other fibrous backing carrying a polyvinyl chloride or other plastics layer of open lattice or like construction, for example as in Fig. 1a is made by pressing the plastics material into the recesses of an engraved roller, maintaining the contacting surface of the material at softening temperature, as by heating the roller, heating the exposed surface of the material, for example by radiant heat, to fusion temperature, and applying the backing to it by means which press the backing into the recesses of the roller. As shown in Fig. 1 plastics material extruded from a nozzle 4 is applied by a roller 3 to a roller 1 engraved with a lattice pattern, surplus material being removed by rollers 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. Rollers 1, 3 are heated to soften the material and maintain its surface in contact with roller 1 at softening temperature; its outer surface is heated to fusion temperature by infra-red heaters 6 on a pivoted and adjustable arm 16. A web 8, of fabric, paper or like backing material is fed from a roll 7 by a roller 9 between the roller 1 and a roller 10 which presses the backing against the lattice web formed by the roller 1 at all points of the lattice. The composite web then passes through an oven 12. The roller 10 may have a hard facing 10i of parchment paper embossed with a relief pattern which is complementary to but shallower than, for example, half the depth of, that in roller 1 so that the web 8 is pressed partly into the recesses in the latter. Alternatively the roller 10 may be faced with synthetic rubber sufficiently resilient to enter the recesses at the pressure point. The roller 9 may apply a polyester or other adhesive to the web 8 to assist bonding of the webs. A roller may be provided above roller 10 to flatten and if desired apply a finish to the lattice web, and, when the lattice produced is a close one, an additional roller may apply a silicone composition to prevent the meshes from closing entirely during flattening. Specification 623,631 s referred to.
