Abstract

Halogenated olefines are polymerized in the presence of a perfluorochlorodiacyl peroxide catalyst in which the acyl radicals contain >CF2 and >CFCl groups substantially alternating with each other and perfluorochloromethyl groups as terminal groups. The olefine may be trifluorochloroethylene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, symmetrical dichloroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, or vinylidene fluoride. The polymerization may be effected in bulk, or aqueous suspension, or emulsion. The peroxy catalyst may be used in conjunction with a reducing agent. In Example 1, trifluorochlorethylene is bulk polymerized in the presence of a peroxide of a C5-acid prepared by oxidizing a cracked oil obtained from polytrifluorochlorethylene; in Example 2 vinyl chloride is bulk polymerized using the same peroxide as 1; in Example 3, trifluorochloroethylene is polymerized in the presence of water and Na2HPO4 and the same peroxide as 1; in Example 4 vinyl chloride is polymerized under the same conditions as in Example 3; in Example 5 trifluorochloroethylene is polymerized in the presence of water, Na2HPO4, and a peroxide of a C17-acid obtained as under (1); whilst in Example 6, vinyl chloride is polymerized in the presence of water, Na2HPO4, and the same peroxide as in Example 1 dissolved in CCl2FCClF2.
