Abstract

1,210,794. Fluorinating fluorocarbon polymers. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 16 Jan., 1969 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 2722/69. Heading C3P. A solid, high molecular weight fluorocarbon polymer which contains chemically unstable end groups is chemically stabilized by contacting the solid polymer in the absence of oxygen with a source of fluorine radicals under conditions at which the source generates fluorine radicals, whereby at least 40% of the chamically unstable end groups are converted to chemically stable end groups. A fluorocarbon polymer is a polymer which is either perfluorinated or highly fluorinated and wherein any substituents other than fluorine are present at a frequency no greater than every other carbon atom in the main polymer chain. In the examples, polymers of tetrafluoroethylene, FSO 2 CF 2 CF 2 OCF(CF 3 )CF 2 OCF = CF 2 and its sodium carboxylate sulphonyl fluoride form, hexafluoropropylene, perfluoro (propyl vinyl ether) and trifluorovinylsulphonyl fluoride were prepared by polymerization in the presence of perfluoropropionyl peroxide, fluorinated hydrocarbon solvent, NgO, water, ammonium persulphate, ammonium carbonate, paraffin and ammonium perfluorooctanate and the polymers fluorinated using fluorine gas, COF 8 and perfluorocaroon cyclic ether solvent. The pendant -SO 2 F groups may be hydrolysed to -SO 3 H groups.
