In a wrapping machine in which opposite ends of a wrapper containing an article are twisted, the twister heads are not identical, and consist of a master unit incorporating the adjusting and most of the operating mechanism and a small slave unit controlled by the master unit. The heads comprise jaws 28, 30 which are reciprocable towards and away from each other. The jaws 28 are carried in a barrel 27 rotatable by gearing 32, 33 and reciprocable by blocks on a lever 42 engaging a recess 45 in an extension of the barrel. The lever 42 is secured to a shaft 43 which is oscillated by a cam 46 through levers 47, 55, 60. The amplitude of movement of the shaft 43 is controlled by an adjustable pivot connection 52 between the levers 47, 55, and the relative angular position of the shaft 43 may be varied by a worm-wheel connection 58, 59 between the lever 55, which is rotatable on the shaft 43, and the shaft 60 which is fixed to the latter. The initial position and amplitude of movement of the jaws 28 may thus be adjusted and the movement and adjustment is communicated to the jaws 30 of the slave unit by gear sector connections 64, 65 between the shaft 43 and a bell-crank 67, the latter engaging a slidable tube 69 bearing the slave unit. The jaws 30 are rotated by gearing 37, 39, a shaft 36 and further gearing 40, 41. The jaws are opened and closed by rack and sector means 71, 72, 82, 83, the opening of the jaws 28 being controlled by a cam 74 through levers 76, 78, 79 and that of the jaws 30 by a cam 89, mounted on the gear 40, and a lever 86.
