Abstract
The invention comprises methyl or ethyl N-(5 - nitro - 2 - thiazolyl) - carbamates, and alkali metal salts thereof. The carbamates may be prepared by intimately contacting 2-amino-5-nitro-thiazole with methyl or ethyl chloro- or bromo-formate, preferably at above 50 DEG C. The hydrogen halide by-product may be removed as gas, or the reaction may be carried out in the presence of an inorganic or organic acid acceptor, such as an amine, e.g. excess of the aminothiazole reactant. Inert organic solvents may be used. The alkali metal salts may be prepared by reacting the methyl or ethyl N-substituted carbamate with an alkali metal hydroxide, preferably in an aqueous medium.ALSO:A concentration of about 0.02 to about 0.2% of methyl or ethyl N-(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl) carbamate, or an alkali metal salt thereof, in the feed or drinking water of turkeys affords control of enterohepatitis (blackhead).
