Class 75(3) A cigarette lighter comprises a casing on which an igniting mechanism is mounted, a replaceable container containing fuel retentive material and liquid fuel, fitted within the casing and a wick having a portion extending into the casing in a position in which it enters the fuel container when the container is inserted in the casing, the fuel retentive material being provided with a cavity to receive the wick as it enters the container. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 in which a known type of ignition mechanism 4 is mounted on the top of the casing 1 a hollow wick containing tube 11 attached to the casing is formed with diametrically opposed slots 13a and has a lower pointed end 11a which penetrates the fuel container 14 when the container 14 is inserted into the casing 1. The upper part of the container 14 formed as a single pressure moulding of polyvinyl chloride is initially open ended and has a rod which is held in position by an annular spigot 18 so that after being filled with cottonwool 17 and the rod removed a circular opening 19 is left for the passage of the tube 11. The open end of the container 14 is sealed by a member 18<SP>1</SP> welded in position. The container is filled with liquid fuel through an opening 19a which is subsequently sealed. A recess 20, bridged by a band 20a, is provided in the side of the container 14 to receive the flint tube 6. To facilitate insertion of the wick 8 into the hollow tube 11 the wick 8 is enclosed by a wire coil 24. The wick 8 may be of any suitable material such as cotton and unglazed porcelain.
