Abstract

Paper &c. is impregnated with a copolymer formed essentially of 60 to 95% of one or more conjugated dienes and/or chlorodienes of 4 to 10 carbon atoms and 40 to 5% of one or more ethylenically-unsaturated monocarboxylic acids of the formula <FORM:0837589/IV (a)/1> where either R1 or R2 represents e.g. an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an aryl radical of 6 to 9 carbon atoms, a halogen, or hydrogen, and the other represents hydrogen, e.g. acrylic methacrylic, sorbic, or cinnamic acid, or many other specified acids which may be polyunsaturated including conjugated diene acids. The conjugated diene &c. may be butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, 2,5-dimethyl-hexadiene, or piperylene or many other specified dienes. The copolymer may also be prepared by partial hydrolysis or saponification of a copolymer of a diene and an acrylic acid. Carboxyl groups of the copolymer may be cross-linked with polyvalent cations, e.g. from basic oxides or hydroxides of zinc, lead, calcium, magnesium, tin, iron, nickel, or cobalt, or sodium aluminate, &c. Catalysts such as alkali persulphates, percarbonates, or perborates; or benzoyl or acetyl peroxide &c., may be incorporated. An example mentions 200 parts of water, 4 of a sodium alkylaryl sulphonate emulsifying agent, 0.02 of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic, 0.5 of potassium persulphate, 0.8 of mixed tertiary mercaptans, 20 of methacrylic acid and 80 of liquid butadiene, air being removed and the mixture agitated at 50 DEG C. After polymerization, ammonium hydroxide was added to the emulsion to bring the pH value to 7.5, and 2% of a potassium rosinate, and 1 part of an anti-oxidant and 1 of melamine-formaldehyde resin were added.
