Abstract

837,578. Pneumatic springs. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Jan. 21, 1958 [Jan. 30, 1957; Jan. 31, 1957; Feb. 1, 1957], No. 2007/58. Class 108(3) An air-spring is made by forming a cylindrical body of rubber plies, expanding the ends into frusto-conical form and turning them back about metal bead rings to form beads. The spring is then moulded and vulcanized in its final shape. A drum 20, Fig. 1, over which the plies are laid is in two parts 21, 22. Chucks 33, 34 hold the bead rings and mandrels 31, 32 expand the ends of the plies. Sleeves 35, 36 turn the ends of the plies about the beads. To load the bead rings into chucks 33, 34 drum sections 21, 22 are moved apart and the chucks moved inwards. The drum sections are now moved together through the bead rings and the chucks moved outwards. The rubber plies are laid on the drum to form a cylindrical body 20. Next the bead ring chucks 33, 34 are positioned over the ends of the cylinder 20, with the bead rings aligned with circumferential ring engaging grooves in the drum sections. Fig. 5 shows the ends of cylinder 20 expanded by mandrels 31, 32 into engagement with bead rings 13, 14. One end of the cylinder 20 is turned back over the bead ring by a key-turning sleeve 35. The ends of the cylinder are stitched in position over the bead-rings Finally an outer cover of gum rubber is applied to the body of the air spring. Mandrels 31, 32 expand the plies at the ends of the air spring by forcing outwards segments which are pivoted in slots in the ends of the drum sections. Each chuck comprises radially movable grooved rollers 120, Fig. 18, mounted on pins 121 held by annular members 122, 123, Fig. 17. Rollers 120 are moved in and out to grip the bead ring by rotating member 128 with respect to members 122, 123 by moving arm 135, Fig. 18, up and down. This causes slots 129 in member 128 to act as cams and force pins 121 to slide radially in slots 124 moving rollers 120 with them. Specifications 807,535 and 819,728 are referred to.
