Class 143 In a balance for fine weighing of the type in which a beam is brought to equilibrium position by the addition or removal of weights, the beam carries one or more elements deformable with temperature change so that the centre of gravity moves vertically in the opposite sense to that induced in the beam by the temperature change. In this way the sensitivity of the beam is unaffected by changes of temperature. In the form shown, the beam 12 is supported by a knife edge 13 engaging a bearing plane 15 and carries two upwardly facing knife edges 14 co-operating with bearing planes for the hangers 18 for the scale plans. When not in use, the beam is held in raised position by an arrestment frame 11. The beam carries rods 21 bent down at the ends to support pistons 22 moving in cylinders 23, a bi-metallic strip 27 being attached to each rod so that under the action of heat the centre of gravity moves vertically in the opposite sense to that of the beam.
