Abstract
837,545. Photo-mechanical printing surfaces. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Aug. 30, 1955, No. 24904/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) [Also in Group XVI] In the preparation of planographic printing plates a paper, synthetic resin, metal or other backing (e.g. a high wet-strength paper loaded with carbon black for good electrical conductivity) is coated directly, or over an undercoat, with a photoconductor suspended in a dielectric film-forming vehicle; a fixed powder image is electrostatically produced thereon; and the non-image areas are chemically treated, in a manner not affecting the powder image, to provide a hydrophilic material solely in said areas. The powder image is preferably hydrophobic. The powder image may be produced as described in Specification 775,812, and the hydrophilic areas by (a) chemical conversion or (b) hydrolyzation of the coating, or by (c) removing it (as in Specification 775,812) to expose the hydrophilic backing or a previously applied hydrophilic layer. In method (a) a coating formed from photo-conductive zinc oxide, a specified silicone resin, and toluene, is made hydrophilic by washing with a solution of (i) a water-soluble bivalent metal salt such as an acetate, nitrate, chloride or formate of barium, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, nickel, strontium, zinc, or any other bivalent metal of Group I, II, IV, VII and VIII of the Periodic Table,. of which the aqueous salt solution is stable; an example is: zinc acetate 20 gms., water 80 ml., ethyl alcohol 20 ml.; or (ii) a water-soluble multi-valent metal formate or acetate with a water-soluble alkaline metal or ammonium formate or acetate; an example is: zirconyl acetate 15, sodium acetate 5, butanol 2, 40% formaldehyde 1 (gms.), water 77 ml. In method (b) the coating vehicle may be hydrolyzable to make it hydrophilic, e.g. it may be cellulose ester, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, or cellulose acetate propionate, an example of a coating material is: zinc oxide 96 gms., low viscosity cellulose acetate 38 gms., acetone 300 ml., methyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) 300 ml. The hydrolyzing solution may be: sodium hydroxide 50 gms., ethyl alcohol 400 ml., and water to make up to 1 litre.
