Abstract

837,177. Toothed gearing. CREED & CO. Ltd. March 28, 1958 [March 30, 1957], No. 10041/58. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a gearing for transporting a telegraph tape (see Group XL (b)) a crown wheel 2, Fig. 1, is driven by a worm-gear 4. The crown wheel teeth have axial faces ca, be, Fig. 3, coacting with parts of the worm-gear teeth having zero pitch and helical faces ad, bf coacting with parts of the worm-gear teeth possessing pitch varying as half a sine wave. The worm-gear may be formed from a steel disc, having a tooth profile, from which two portions are punched out to leave portions 11, Fig. 5, which are die-formed to give the desired pitch characteristic, together with a flat butterfly portion 13 spaced from the first portion by a washer 15. A wormgear with four variable-pitch portions is also described, Fig. 6 (not shown).
