A nuclear reactor for ship propulsion is housed in a compartment containing water which may be open to the water in which the vessel floats. The water acts as a reactor shield and reduces the load on the reactor supports. The casing 14 containing the reactor rests on supports 15 and is enclosed by a tank 16 filled with water ; it is connected to heat exchangers 18 through flexible joints 19a. The whole is placed between bulkheads 12. For loading, tubes 21 connect the reactor and control room 20. A fuel store 22 is provided.
