Abstract

A non-chipping cutting tool material comprises a consolidated mass of molybdenum-coated alumina particles of size preferably less than 10 microns. The material, which may contain 2 to 40% by weight of molybdenum is produced by initially, either (i) soaking alumina particles in a molybdenum salt solution, drying and heating, or (ii) evaporating molybdenum in a vacuum and depositing it on the particles, or (iii) passing a mixture of hydrogen and a vaporized molybdenum halide through the particles heated to from 1000 DEG to 1400 DEG C.; thereafter pressing and sintering the consolidated mass in non-oxidizing conditions, e.g. in a neutral or reducing atmosphere or in vacuo, at a temperature above 1600 DEG C., preferably between 1700 DEG and 1800 DEG C.ALSO:A non-chipping cutting tool material comprises a consolidated mass of molybdenum-coated alumina particles of size preferably less than 10 microns.
