Abstract
Detergent compositions comprise (a) a surface-active substance and (b) an ester of a boric acid with a fatty acid alkanolamide or with a mixture of a fatty acid alkanol-amide and an alcohol, the boric acid being completely esterified and containing at least one alkanolamide residue per boron atom; the fatty acid alkanolamide is preferably one containing 10-20 carbon atoms in the fatty acid chain and up to 5 carbon atoms in the alkanol residue. Component (a) may be a soap derived from natural or synthetic fatty acids, an ethercarboxylate, the condensate of a fatty acid with an amino acid or with a protein hydrolysis product, an alkyl- or cycloalkyl-sulphonate, an alkyl- or cycloalkyl-aryl sulphonate, a fatty acid ester of a hydroxyalkyl sulphonate, a condensate of a fatty acid with an aminoalkyl sulphonate, an alkyl sulphate, a sulphated partial ester of a fatty acid with a polyhydric alcohol, a sulphated partial ether of a fatty alcohol with a polyhydric alcohol, a sulphated fatty alcohol polyglycol or polyglycerol ether, a sulphated fatty acid alkanolamide, a polyethylene glycol, or a mixed polyether. The amount of (b) present should not be more than that of (a) and is generally less. The compositions may also include alkali metal phosphate, polyphosphate, sulphate, silicate, perborate, carbonate and bicarbonate, magnesium sulphate and silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose paraffins, fatty acids, alcohols, esters, especially glycerides, lanolin, lecithin, titanium dioxide, kaolin, bentonite, colloidal silica, boric acid, urea, 3 : 5 : 6 : 31 : 51 : 61 - hexachloro - 2 : 21 - dihydroxydiphenylmethane, perfume, optical brightners, deodorants, dyestuffs and disinfectants. The compositions may be produced in bar, powder, chip, noodle or flake form by conventional methods, the boric acid ester, which preferably has a melting point of 65-110 DEG C., being suitably added in a molten state to a paste of the surface-active substance. In one embodiment, an ethylene oxide reaction product with a fatty alcohol, a fatty acid or an alkylphenol is melted together with the ester (b), and the melt is allowed to harden in moulds to form sticks which are suitable for use in removing fat stains from textiles of polyamide fibres.ALSO:Borate esters of fatty acid alkanolamides are obtained by heating boric acid (H3BO3) or an anhydride thereof, e.g. HBO2, H2B4O7 or B2O3, with the fatty acid alkanolamide or with a mixture of a fatty acid alkanolamide and an alcohol, so that the boric acid is completely esterified and contains at least one alkanolamide residue per boron atom; the fatty acid alkanolamide is preferably one containing 10-20 carbon atoms in the fatty acid chain and up to 5 carbon atoms in the alkanol residue, and the reaction is carried out preferably at 80-160 DEG C. The water formed may be removed by the passage of inert gas, by boiling inert solvents, or directly at the upper range of reaction temperature. The esters may also be obtained by inter-esterifying boric acid esters with fatty acid alkanolamides.
