Abstract
The invention comprises prednisolone hydrate (the characteristic physical properties of which are listed) and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises crystallizing prednisolone hydrate in aqueous methanol and recovering and drying said hydrate. Prednisolone hydrate has the formula [(D 1,4 - pregnadiene - 3,20 - dione - 11,17a ,21 - triol)2(H2O)3]. Solution of prednisolone in aqueous methanol may be effected at 25-65 DEG C., the insolubles removed by filtering, and the solution cooled to crystallize the hydrate, which is recovered and dried in vacuo at about 40 DEG C. Specification 669,709 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises a stable aqueous suspension for topical and parenteral administration comprising prednisolone hydrate and a pharmaceutically - acceptable vehicle. Antibiotics, e.g. penicillin G, penicillin O, procaine penicillin, novobiocin, bacitracin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, tetracycline, endomycin and polymyxin, vitamins, e.g. Vitamin A, Vitamin B, riboflavin, pyridoxine, ascorbic acid and Vitamin B12, preservatives, buffers, surtactants, isotonic agents, and suspending agents may also be present. Suspensions for nasal use may employ a vasoconstrictor such as epinephrine, or phenylephrine hydrochloride. Examples describe aqueous suspensions for injection, for nasal use, for the eye and ear, and for topical and parenteral use. Specification 669,709 is referred to.
