836,367. Furnace electrodes. REPUBLIC STEEL CORPORATION. March 5, 1957 [March 15, 1956], No. 7241/57. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXII] A consumable electrode of a metal difficult to melt e.g. zirconium or titanium for use in an arc melting furnace comprises a rod having one or more elongated reinforcing strips 51 in a matrix of compressed particles of the metal 38. The strips 51 are twisted and of the same metal as the matrix, in which they are located at depths of one third and two thirds of the thickness thereof. The electrode is wrapped completely or almost so in a sheet of the same metal pressed thereon. An open elongated horizontal channel 4 is filled with metal sponge or scrap in which the strips 51 are embedded, and a punch. 2 is forced vertically down thereon to form the electrode, the channel being advanced stepwise horizontally between successive blows of the punch (see Group XXII).
