Abstract
A roller consists of a natural or synthetic rubber body having a surface layer of silicone resin bonded integrally thereto. The resin may comprise the hydrolysis product of at least one lower alkyl chlorosilane and is coated on to the rubber as a solution in a ketone, preferably a methyl ketone. Coating may be by spraying, dipping, wiping or brushing and is followed by evaporation of the solvent and heat curing of the resin. Several coats may be applied. When using solutions of 5% or less resin, up to 25% of the ketone may be replaced by a hydrophobic solvent, e.g. naphtha, mineral spirits or carbon tetrachloride. The resin may be the hydrolysis product of a mixture of substantially equal proportions of dimethyldichlorosilane, methyldichlorohydrogensilane and less than 5% of trimethylchlorosilane. The solution includes a silicone curing catalyst, e.g. lead 2-ethyl hexoate. The duration of curing varies between 5 minutes at 350 DEG F. and two hours at 150 DEG F.
