Abstract
<PICT:0836185/III/1> Basic nitrogen compounds are removed from liquid hydrocarbon oil distillates by passing the oil, together with water, through a bed of solid bisulphate. Bisulphates specified are hydrated sodium bisulphate, potassium, ammonium and lithium bisulphates, and mixtures thereof. The amount of water added is preferably not more than 6 kg. per gm. mol. of basic nitrogen present in the feed. The process may be operated at up to 40 DEG C. and the bisulphate may be mixed with an inert filler. Column A contains a bed of solid bisulphate supported on grid B. Oil is introduced through line C and water is preferably introduced through distributer D (though it may merely be mixed with the oil in line C). The treated liquid separates into 2 layers in zone E at the foot of the column, purified oil being removed via line G and water containing the impurities via line F. Examples demonstrate the relative efficiency of the process when operated with and without the water. The process is applicable to straight run, cracked and reformed petroleum distillates, crude benzene and shale and tar distillates. Specification 202,422 is referred to.
