In a system in which a multi-digit number denoting the wanted exchange is sent repeatedly from the calling exchange until the connection reaches the wanted exchange, each digit is represented by a two-out-of-five frequency code, and, since the first digit to arrive at the receiver is not necessarily the first digit of the number, an additional frequency is sent for each digit to indicate the digit place, this frequency being effective to connect up the appropriate storage device.
