Abstract
835,981. Agglomerating ores. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. July 15, 1958 [July 22, 1957], No. 22690/58. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XII] A process for making hard, unsintered pellets of finely divided magnetite ore comprises forming the ore into moist green pellets, arranging the pellets as a movable body with individual pellets at rest within the body, heating the pellets to drive off moisture, preheating the dried pellets to oxidize magnetite to heamatite and to cause the grains of haematite within each pellet to bridge together to develop pellet strength and then tumbling the pellets in a highly oxidizing atmosphere to complete the growth of haematite grains and to provide a continuous network of haematite crystals throughout. each pellet without formation of slag. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, pellets are delivered from a hopper 12 to moving grate 13 on which they pass in the form of a layer of pellets through a drying zone 22, where drying is effected at a temperature in the range 500-900‹F., then to preheating zone 26, preheating being effected in the range 1600-1800‹F. The pellets then pass to inclined rotary kiln 32 in which final firing takes place in the range 2200- 2450‹F. The pellets fall into rotary cooler 50 where they preheat combustion air passing up to the furnace. Hot gases from fuel burner 41 pass through the rotary kiln, downwards through the layer of pellets in zone 26, through pipe 27, downwards through the layer of pellets in zone- 22 and are exhausted via the stack 20.
