Abstract

The invention comprises salts of elenolic acid of general formula (C11H13O6)nM, where M i sodium, potassium, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, zinc or ferrous iron and n is the valency of M; ethers of elenolic acid and its esters of general formula C11H13O6R and C11H12O6(R)2 respectively, where R is an alkyl group of less than six carbon atoms; and a process for the preparation of elenolic acid concentrates by extracting parts of plants of the Oleaceae family with a water-immiscible organic solvent, separating the neutral constituents from the extract by evaporation to dryness, solution of the residue in an aqueous bicarbonate solution of pH 7-7.5, and solvent extraction, whereafter the elenolic acid portion is isolated by acidification of the aqueous phase and extraction with a water-immiscible solvent, e.g. chloroform or ether. Detailed examples illustrate the extraction of elenolic acid from Olea europea and the preparation of its salts, elenolide, and the methyl and ethyl ethers of elenolic acid and its methyl and ethyl esters.ALSO:Concentrates of elenolic acid, C11H14O6 are prepared by extracting parts of plants of the Oleaceae family with a non-water miscible organic solvent, removing the neutral constituents from the extract by evaporating it to dryness, treating an aqueous solution of the residue with bicarbonate (to pH 7-7.5) adding a water-soluble salt, and extracting with a non-water miscible organic solvent, then acidifying the aqueous phase and extracting the elenolic acid with a non-water miscible organic solvent, e.g. chloroform or ether. Elenolic acid, its salts, e.g. magnesium, calcium, zinc, ferrous, ammonium sodium and potassium, elenolide, and acetals and acetalesters of elenolic acid are hypotensive agents which may be administered orally, as suspensions or solutions but preferably in solid form coated against the action of gastric acid, parenterally as an aqueous solution suitable for injection, or by incorporation in suppositories.
