Abstract

A pourable concentrate, suitable for addition to liquid petroleum hydrocarbons, comprises a powdered additive, which is dispersible in such petroleum hydrocarbons, the additive being intimately dispersed in a blend of an alkyl benzene (whose alkyl groups contain 3-24 carbon atoms in the chain) and another normally liquid hydrocarbon vehicle. The alkyl benzene constitutes a minor proportion of the concentrate. The additive may be a dye, antioxidant, gum inhibitor, anti-rust compound, ignition controller, scavenger, stabilizer or mixtures of these, and specific additives mentioned are tert. butyl phenol, phenyl naphthylamines, hydroquinone and dihydroxy anthraquinone. They may be suitable for addition to mineral spirits, seal oil, fuel oil, hydrocarbon jet fuels or high boiling petroleum hydrocarbons. The alkyl benzene may be mono- or poly-alkylated and mixtures of alkyl benzenes may be employed. The liquid hydrocarbon vehicle may be a lubricating oil. In the examples the preparation is described of pourable paste concentrates from various dyestuffs, mineral lubricating oil, and isopropyl, n-, sec.- or tert.-butyl, C3 alkyl, C12 alkyl or C24 alkyl benzenes. In some examples, the concentrates are thinned with kerosene.
